646f9e108c Following the events of Godzilla 1985, scientists collect genetic material from the mutated dinosaur Godzilla's scales. A Middle Eastern country wants the samples for their own purposes, but meanwhile, a lonely scientist combines Godzilla's genetic code with those of a rose and his own deceased daughter. The result is Biollante, an eerie plant of titanic proportions. To make matters worse, a psychic woman detects Godzilla stirring from his volcanic prison. The military sends the flying Super-X2 to stop the beast from thrashing Japan, but eventually Godzilla engages the rapidly mutating Biollante in a fight to the death. After rising from his volcanic grave, Godzilla is threatened by a mutated rosebush. This Godzilla movie was very unique and after viewing it I have now seen every Godzilla movie ever made! This one was a mixed bag as the DVD copy I got was in Japanese with no English subtitles so I had some trouble with the plot at times, but for the most part I understand what was going on. What I have heard about this movie was for the most part true as this one was rather violent for a Godzilla movie as there are quite a few killings of people in the early stages of the movie. The fights between Godzilla and Biorante were rather cool, but were also very short as I have often read from other reviews here at IMDb. However, it has a nice story from what I understood as people at the beginning of the film are trying to get Godzilla cells for some different types of purposes. However, all is not well in Japan as at this place doing psychic research some kids have had the same vision and they are drawing pictures of Godzilla. Yes, seems that volcano from the previous movie did not finish him off, which is cool as when I saw that film as a child even though watching Godzilla die in that film made me sad I told my mother that I bet he could survive a volcano. Somehow, with the possible return of Godzilla on the horizon the military begins scrambling and I think there is discussions of making some sort of anti Godzilla weapon, I thought they said a cyborg, but I may be mistaken. Well a scientist who lost his daughter I think in a terrorist type attack near the beginning of the film is given a Godzilla cell and he combines it with a rose cell and the monster Biorante is soon born. Seeing it at first I was thinking this thing does not stand a chance against Godzilla. Well Godzilla soon starts another rampage and the military launches the super X-2 an upgrade over that vehicle that fought Godzilla in the last movie. This time they wisely made it an unmanned vehicle. Well there are fights galore and a fight between Godzilla and what amounted to a large rose bush which I give points for it being very original. Later, Biorante would come back and be one of the coolest looking Godzilla enemies ever. It also was very underdeveloped as I think they could have made the fights longer as Biorante and Godzilla just seemed to be getting warmed up and the fight was over. I just so could see Biorante as a very good villain as it is tearing up everything with its vines and overrunning Tokyo and all of Japan and the only thing that can stop it is the power of Godzilla type affair and I would even have it scoop people up with its vines and essentially eat them. I just found Biorante rather creepy even in rose bush form and I think they could have done some dark things with it. In the end it was nice to finally see this one, as I finally saw the guy who was killed that the guy in Space Godzilla wanted to avenge. One thing I really CANNOT understand is how high this terrible flop is rated by most IMDb users. How on earth could these persons be thrilled by this monument of stupidity ? I must admit I just envy them because I have seldom be bored to a greater extent by a movie designed to...entertain !<br/><br/>Not that it couldn't have made a spectacular, thought-provoking spectacle. There ARE some interesting themes in it : how to put an end to starvation in poor countries ; the dangers of cloning and genetic engineering ; the threat of multinationals. The trouble is THE WAY they are broached. Superficiality, confusion, ridicule are rampant throughout the story and suspension of belief is almost immediate. The dialogues are hopeless : how many times do the characters utter such deep statements as ;"Miki, where are you going ? It's dangerous." , "Oh, it's Biollante!" or "Oh, Jesus Christ, it's Biollante !" But things go worse when the characters forget these platitudes to become profound. They adopt such an earnest tone that it would give rise to laughter if we were not totally disconnected !<br/><br/>The acting is bad : all the actors believe in the story, even the women who are content to cry in horror or to follow the males. What use is Miki in the story at all? I still haven't found out.<br/><br/>The only good thing about this preposterous mishmash is the monster - not Godzilla, doing what he has been doing for 35 years but Biollante. The design of this unexpected creature is amazing. But how come they use it so little ?<br/><br/>I was happy when the film came to its conclusion. I had expected the charm and naivety of a B movie while I had just been delivered<br/><br/>with a pretentious piece of nonsense. Unlike most movies that have an black backdrop during the credits, the Heisei Godzilla films had special footage that played during the credits. In this film we see the symbolic image of a rose above Earth, showing audiences that Biollante is still alive and a possible hint to her return to Earth in "Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla". Yes, in fact there are three. keep in note these scenes can not be seen on the internet anywhere (as far as I have searched) or on the Sony Tristar DVD release of the film. In order to see them you must buy the actual Toho DVD, available on Amazon.com and monsterislandtoys.com.<br/><br/>1) Extended footage of Godzilla marching to Lake Ashino<br/><br/>2) At the end of Godzilla and Biollante's first fight, he kills her as he did in the final cut, by setting her on fire with his heat ray. However, in the deleted scene, the golden energy spores left behind her body rise into the air and then cover the shores of Ashino lake in a blanket of beautiful flowers. godzilla is only briefly intested, before leaving. Although Koichi Kawakita (the SFX director) was impressed with his work, the flowers were out of scale, and so the screen was scrapped.<br/><br/>3) there was a radical alternate ending where Godzilla actually dies from the ANEB (Anti-Nuclear Energy Bacteria) and Biollante, also wounded due to Godzilla's heat ray, swallows Godzilla and both become the golden energy spores seen earlier when Biollante first died. The scene used a combination of anime and live action to depict this, but this was ultimately cut out in order to continue the series . Godzilla died a somewhat similar death six years later in the film "Godzilla vs. Destroyah"<br/><br/>4) There is a famous cut scene where stop motion is used for the first fight scene between Godzilla and Biollante, but this was either cut out because the film makers wanted to continue to use the tradition of suit-mation and practical effects, and or budget constraints.
